A sperm whale calf has been recently found on Little Florida Beach, based on the latest reports from the Wildlife and Fisheries Department in Louisiana. According to Mandy Tomlin, a marine biologist, these whales usually live in the Gulf of Mexico, so it’s a mystery why they would come close to the coast.
Tomlin suspects that this young calf and its mother got separated and this is why the confused animal was eventually washed ashore. She further added that the dead animal was most likely a dependent female calf. Also, she believes that the mother was still nursing the young whale before they got separated.
Although the calf was probably ill before it was washed ashore, another whale was recently found on another Florida beach. Experts did a thorough examination of the carcass to discover the death cause.
Tomlin said that ‘Full internal necropsy where we obtained samples from all of the different organs and different systems inside the animals, as well as, genetic sampling and a suite of other samples that we worked on.’
However, she stressed that it would take between a few weeks and a few months for the experts to analyze all samples and compare them to other whale samples collected from carcasses washed ashore this year.
By doing this, they hope to find not just the reason why these whales died, but also how to stop this strange phenomenon that will worsen in a few years from now, taking its toll on the sperm whale population.
George Melancon, the marine fisheries’ area manager in Southwest Louisiana, said that the last sperm whale was washed ashore on the Louisiana beach around 20 years ago. Sperm whales usually live in deep trenches, so they are regarded as mysterious mammals.
The whale calf was 23-feet long, and as Tumlin believes, it was most likely recently born. Neither the authorities nor the citizens witnessed the mother around the coast after the calf was washed ashore.
Some volunteers had to move the carcass from the area where the calf was first found because there were pipelines around. Also, the dead whale could explode because of the gas found in its internal organs.
Scientists will continue their research in order to find out more about this issue as many whales were stranded on the United States beaches this year.
