Two fell victim to a fatal tank blast in Oregon, with authorities currently investigating the incident and the scene. The tank dates back to World War II and is supposedly featuring in several video footages, including one from the Discovery Channel.
A little after 3 p.m., the Oregon State Police, the Sheriff’s deputies and the Bend Fire Department crew arrived at the scene of the fatal tank blast. Two victims were found on the spot. It might be that the call reporting the blast was too late, as one of the victims seems to have died there, while the other was still alive.
While the identities of the victims haven’t been released due to ongoing investigation, authorities on the scene stated that the second man was still alive. Unfortunately, he passed away as medics tried to rush the victim to immediate emergency care.
The World War II tank is located in a public firing range, in the vicinity of Bend, approximately 24 miles to the east, according to the Sheriff deputies of Deschutes county. The World War II tank is also in the vicinity of the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association. Open to the public, the shooting range is in Deschutes County, 140 miles from Salem.
Sheriff Shane Nelson and Sheriff Sgt. Nathan Garibay expressed their regret at the loss of lives and sent their condolences to the families. As two fell victim to a fatal tank blast in Oregon and one man was reportedly still alive, an AirLink helicopter was called at the scene of the incident. However, he could not be saved, although medical response was prompt.
Sheriff Nelson added that at the time, a filming crew was reported at the location of the World War II tank as well. The video footage could provide crucial information on the causes of the explosion and the reasons behind it.
“There was a camera crew on scene, and they were filming the tank. As to what they were filming or why they were filming, those details haven’t been found out yet.”
It is possible that the two men who lost their lives in the fatal blast were trying to fire up the antiqued mechanism. With so many faults due to the passage of time, an explosion is the most probable outcome. However, no clues are yet available to establish the cause of the fatal blast or the reasons the men were there in the first place.
Currently, the investigation is being conducted by the Oregon State Police Arson and Explosives Section, as well as the Sheriff’s detectives.
