Stubbs, the cat that was elected mayor, passed away at 20 years old.
Talkeetna, a small town in Alaska, just lost its mayor, the 20 years old cat Stubbs, that is also among the most famous felines. “Mayor Stubbs”, as the cat came to be called, was elected honorary mayor back in 1998. Since then, the small town hasn’t had a single human mayor.
The Death of Stubbs Officially Confirmed by its Family
Talkeetna is a small town in Alaska with a population of around 900 people. Back in 1998, in a write-in campaign, residents to vote and elect as their mayor a cat. This was reportedly caused by their being unhappy and displeased with the human candidates.
Since the feline’s election, the town hasn’t had any human mayor. Stubbs was an honorary mayor, as he lacked both legislative and rhetorical abilities. However, that did not affect its ratings as these remained high ever since the election.
This feline mayor was quite high-maintenance, as it liked to drink catnip and water from a Margarita glass. Still, the cat also played his part and contributed to the local economy as it became a major local attraction.
“Over 75% of visitors ask ‘Where’s the mayor?’ or come in with this statement ‘I have an appointment with the mayor. I think we heard those two statements over 100 times a day during our first year,” residents were reported as saying.
Stubbs did raise its share of controversies, survived an attack from a dog back in 2015, and was proven to still be alive after a false death report last year.
Stubbs’s passing away was confirmed by its family, who released a statement on the matter. According to it, the cat died in its sleep sometime during the night between July 20 to July 21.
Stubbs was 20 years and three months old and a “trooper until the very last day of his life”, declares his family.
