Small plane crash at Hammond airport results in two casualties. The aircraft was trying to make it back to the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport in Louisiana when it crashed into a field near a runway on Wednesday afternoon, October 14.
The coroner said the crash was considerably bad, with the aircraft bursting into flames soon after impact and setting ablaze nearby land. Fire fighters were brought to the area to extinguish the flames and seek to potentially save any survivors. Sadly, both men onboard the small plane had died instantly on impact.
According to Hammond Fire Chief John Thomas, the two victims were the people onboard the small plane. Thomas said the aircraft went down on the northern end of the sprawling airport a few hundred yards away from runway 1836.
An ambulance helicopter and a representative of Tangipahoa Parish coroner’s office were immediately brought to the scene of the crash. The airport includes dual-lighted runways and is fully equipped to handle large aircraft, with a surface area of 900 acres.
Very few details have been made public about the incident. Hammond authorities have not released any information about the destination of the plane or its owner. Thomas further said that the scene of the accident will be turned over to the authority of the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board for further investigation.
More information about the ongoing investigation is expected to be released on Thursday, throughout the day, as further details are uncovered.
According to the FAA, the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 421. The aircraft has reportedly experienced technical difficulties and trouble shortly after departing from its original location. The investigation has determined that the pilot tried to return immediately after experiencing technical problems but was unable to do so.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Lynn Lunsford has said:
“We are asking for prayers for the family and friends of the victims involved and for all of the first responders that arrived here today. Our hearts are heavy as we investigate the events that led this tragic incident.”
Family members are now in grief and demand answers as to what could have caused the accident which claimed the lives of their loved ones. It remains unclear as of this point whether any foul play was involved and what exactly caused the technical difficulties which eventually brought the plane down in such a tumultuous manner.
