Maintaining a healthy weight doesn’t mean one has to follow strict diets or go through exhausting exercises.
A new study suggests that going to the grocery store equipped with a shopping list done at home could help fight fat and keep a healthy diet.
Researchers found that people who shopped with a list had a healthier weight.
The latest study confirms previous research that showed people can actually lose weight if they follow a list when they go shopping for groceries.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers went from door to door to collect demographic information, weight and height and also details about the person’s dietary habits.
The researchers conducted the surveys in neighborhoods with lower incomes from Pittsburgh. These neighborhoods are known as “food deserts” because there are very few options for healthy foods.
Most of the residents from the surveyed neighborhoods had an income of less than $20,000 and most of them were African-Americans.
The researchers asked more than 1,300 people about their grocery shopping habits and found that about a third of them always went shopping with a list.
17% of them answered that they sometimes use a shopping list, while 26% said that they never do it using a list.
According to the study, those who planned their shopping weighed less than those who didn’t use a grocery list.
On average, these residents weighed at about 5 pounds less, compared to the other that engaged in free-range grocery shopping.
Tamara Dubowitz, one of the researchers who conducted the study and the lead author, said that she would not be surprised to discover similar results in neighborhoods with other levels of income.
The researchers detailed their findings in the new edition of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
Dubowitz, senior policy researcher at RAND Corporation, said that having a shopping list is an efficient way to avoid the temptations of unhealthy food options that assault us at every grocery store.
A previous study showed that in California, unhealthy food has 71% of outdoor advertising, while healthy food only has 12.2%.
Dubowitz advises that if we can plan at home what we’re going to buy, it will keep us more focused.
Food marketers’ job is to sell their products, not to keep us healthy, Dubowitz explained.
Experts say that in order to maintain a healthy diet, one could try this easy strategy of going shopping with a grocery list written at home.
