Scientists have devised a light-based microprocessor, a computer chip that is able to transmit information 100 times faster than traditional wire computer chips.
The novel computer component was developed by a joint team of computer scientists (not rocket scientists, from MIT and the Universities of California and Colorado. In their labs, the computer scientists have been able to devise a single-chip microprocessor which is able to speed up data transmission.
As stated, traditional microprocessor relies on a complex network of electrical wires and other components in order to encode information into a stream of electrons. According to the scientists in charge of this project, the new single-chip microprocessor uses light in order to transmit information, rather than electrons.
Basically, the new computer component was able to unify both proton and electron transmission technology under a single banner. Thus, the new computerized component will be able to open the road to new computer achievements, ones that are capable of transmitting more information at far greater speeds than their predecessors. Also, the scientists mentioned that the new computers build with these components will require less power in order to function.
Scientists have devised a light-based microprocessor which uses both electrons and photons. According to the chip’s specifications, the new computer component has approximately 70 million transistors and more than 850 photonic components.
The two sets of components are designed to work simultaneously in order to ensure several functions, including memory, logic and interconnect functions.
Regarding their newly designed computer chip, one of the scientists explained a couple of things to the general public. According to his statement, the quantity and how many information a computer can process relies on electrical wires.
