Ryan Gosling and his best friend George
The famous Hollywood actor best known for the romantic drama The Notebook, has written an open letter to Costco in which he asks the giant warehouse store to stop using caged eggs.
Ryan Gosling wrote the letter, which was published by Humane Society, to Craig Jelinek, the CEO of Costco.
Gosling wrote the letter after he saw footage made public by the Humane Society which depicted one of Costco’s major suppliers mistreating the animals.
The video footage showed the extreme conditions in which the chickens live: numerous rows of birds confined in very dirty cages. In the video live chickens are showed eating, sleeping, laying their eggs on corpses of chickens.
The birds are also showed trapped in the wires of their corroded cages.
Gosling wrote in his letter that he finds it “appalling” that Costco has been deceiving its customers using images of birds that live freely on a green pasture, when in fact the animals are suffering extreme mistreatment.
In 2010, Costco banned the use of caged veal and in 2012 the company pressured the suppliers to stop using gestation crates for pigs.
Referring to these two previous actions, Ryan Gosling wrote in his letter that chicken also deserve “the same mercy”.
He went on saying that numerous corporations are changing their ways of doing business and are using more humane products and more transparency.
Gosling hopes that Costco will also stop using eggs from caged chickens.
This is not the first time Gosling advocates for animal rights.
He is known for supporting animal welfare initiatives.
Gosling was one of the Hollywood actors and actresses who supported the petition against the way McDonald’s mistreated the hens in 2011.
In 2013, the actor wrote an op-ed that was published in the Globe and Mail in which he talked about the mistreatment of farmed pigs in Canada, his native country.
Gosling decided to make public his opinions after the Humane Society had a successful campaign to improve the animals’ conditions.
The actor congratulated the initiative of the National Farm Animal Care Council to try and improve the life of the pigs in Canada.
He also said that the pork industry should stop its extremely cruel treatment of its animals, like confining the pigs for weeks at a time.
Gosling said that “no compassionate Canadian” would ever allow this to happen to any animal.
Costco has not made any comments about the Ryan Gosling letter.
