Meet Sarcastic Rover, NASA’s little one-ton toy that arrived on Mars exactly three years ago. Rover’s touchdown meant only one thing: Earth had made it to Mars and Earth would theoretically start “rolling” around on the red planet to see its wonders and if it can find anything interesting.
Sarcastic Rover is actually a funny nickname that came as a result of its funny Twitter account. His real name is Curiosity and his account was created in August 2012. He has a mind of his own, you know, and he will not hesitate to express his opinion, especially because we’ve sent him alone on a far-away planet.
After he landed on Mars, Sarcastic Rover was pretty upset about being stuck in a crater, but that’s not all! He specifically said that he “cannot wait to do geology… that won’t cure cancer for anyone” and he was pretty excited about finding an alien which turned out to be a rock. He is a persistent guy, however. Once he said that he hoped to find some water so that he can drown himself in it, but he got over his mood and carried on.
Needless to say, we are not talking about an actual rover with mood swings, but the attempt definitely got the attention of thousands of people within minutes. It seems as though the account attracted about 7 thousand people during its first night online and now it has 134 thousand followers.
Jason Filiatrault, who is the rover’s actual conscience, seems quite happy with how the account is doing and he also mentioned that he is having a lot of fun.
“It’s nice to have a hobby to look into, something to read about, all that kind of stuff. I don’t have an end date for it. I like doing it. It’s fun for me. I don’t see any reason to stop… Maybe I’ll just keep going and going for forever and that’ll be the only thing I ever do, and that’ll be sad… or fantastic.”
What is fascinating is that Filiatrault has never actually been interested in space exploration. He just follows NASA’s efforts and tags along. But ever since Sarcastic Rover landed on Mars, his life has become more interesting. And it really looks like he doesn’t want to end soon.
All in all, Sarcastic Rover is a good example of how you can make something rather complicated accessible to the larger public. If you want to have a laugh from time to time, you might as well follow the funny Rover on Twitter. We can guarantee that you will have a good time.
