The girl was suffering from Rapunzel syndrome, and kept on chewing on her hair
A teenager from Skegness, UK, died soon after her grandfather burial. The girl suddenly collapsed at school, went home to rest, but she still had to call an ambulance. Unfortunately, the medical staff couldn’t do anything, so she didn’t survive. After her death, they were able to find out the girl was suffering from Rapunzel syndrome, and died because a hairball got infected in her stomach.
Doctors couldn’t do anything to save the girl
Jasmine Beever, 16, died a tragic death only a few days after attending her grandfather’s funeral. Everybody was left in shock, since no one was aware of her suffering from any incurable illness. Doctors performed a post-mortem investigation, and found out she had peritonitis. This means her abdominal wall was swollen.
Afterwards, doctors found a hairball inside the girl’s stomach. This hairball had gotten infected, which led to her developing peritonitis and, in the end, to the burst of an ulcer. Unfortunately, her organs couldn’t take it, and they all stopped functioning.
What is Rapunzel syndrome?
After the tragic incident happened, her close ones revealed she had been sucking and chewing on her hair for many years. This is known as trichotillomania, a compulsive need to eat and suck on hair. Unfortunately, this condition is most of the time associated with Rapunzel syndrome.
This Rapunzel syndrome occurs when people chew on hair or other materials impossible to digest, and lead to the formation of hairballs in their digestive systems. These hairballs are also called trichobezoars. Most of the time, the digestive system gets blocked, and not all removal procedures are successful.
Jasmine’s best friend, together with her mom, Donna Marshall, have started a crowdfunding campaign to help the grieving family. Nobody can believe something like this has happened, and want to stay close to the family and help them as they can. Marshall can barely cope with the situation herself.
“It’s just heartbreaking — to bury your own daughter is one thing but to be going through it so soon after losing your dad, you can’t comprehend it.”
