On May 31st, 2014, two 12-year girls allegedly lured Payton Leutner into the woods and stabbed her multiple times. The victim was able to escape her attackers and dragged her body to a nearby road where a cyclist spotted her and alerted the authorities.
Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, now 15 years old could be trialed as adults under Wisconsin law, and if found guilty, they could face up to 65 years behind bars. Anisa Weier’s parents, Bill and Kristi spoke out their minds on the horrific attack for the first time since the incident.
They say they had no idea what their little girl was up to at the time and were as shocked as everyone else when they got the call from the local authorities informing them about what Anissa had done. Furthermore, the parents say that their daughter showed deep remorse and even vented on several occasions when they visited her in prison.
The victim was supposedly lured into the woods near Waukesha by Morgan Geyser whom Payton Leutner saw as a friend. Anissa’s mother said she is praying for Payton to one day find true friendship.
Even though the girls are still underage, they could be trialed as adults. However, Mr. Bill Weier believes the Wisconsin laws are outdated and the decision should be reversed.
“The laws have not advanced with what we know about juvenile brain development”, said Bill Weier during the interview.
Both Anissa’s parents say they are still struggling to come to terms with what happened. Nevertheless, they declared they are thankful Payton survived and said they are still trying to understand what could have determined their daughter to attempt to take another one’s life.
The attackers pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness, and face attempted murder charges.the victim was able to recover from her wounds, both physical, as well as mental, and returned to school one year after the attack.
An HBO documentary on the attack dubbed “Beware the Slenderman” is scheduled to air next week. The attacker’s parents were approached by the producers ahead of filming, but they refused to get involved. The documentary includes police footage from inside the interview room, depicting Anissa reeling her motive for the attack, as well as the 911 call that alerted authorities in relation to the incident.
