Two people tried to ram the main gate of the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland on Monday, according to a federal official. According to the law enforcement officer, an NSA police officer shot one of the people dead and severely injured the second.
A law enforcement official had previously stated that both perpetrators were men. Two vehicles at an intersection that appear to be damaged were revealed by aerial shots of the scene.
The FBI announced Monday morning that it was undergoing an investigation with NSA police and other law enforcement agencies, and also interviewing witnesses of the incident, which took place near one of the gates to the complex, at a considerable distance from the main buildings. The FBI added they did not think terrorism was related to the incident.
“We are working with the US Attorney’s Office in Maryland to determine if federal charges are warranted,” the FBI explained in a statement.
Eric Schultz, the White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary, said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the incident.
This is the second security incident this month involving the NSA. A few weeks ago, a former state correctional officer was arrested and accused in a series of Maryland shootings, including one at Fort Meade, where today’s shootings took place. According to a police report, gunshots hit a building near the NSA office.
Officers pulled over Hong Young, 35, of Beltsville, Maryland, and identified his car as matching authorities’ description of a vehicle seen in surveillance footage close to some of the other shootings. Officers found a gun in the car which matched the evidence recovered from the shootings. Young was arrested, authorities said.
Police explained earlier this month that there were no connections to terrorism in the case. Also, no motive has been determined to explain the incident. No one was killed in the five shootings.
Fort Meade is not only home to the headquarters of the NSA, but to 95 units from all branches of the armed forces and also for offices that serve several Defense Department agencies, said the U.S. Army, which operates the base.
Approximately 11,000 military employees and 29,000 civilians work at Fort Meade. More than 6,000 people also live on the base, which started its operations in 1917 as a garrison for World War I draftees.
