Even though most health experts recommend eating and drinking fresh fruits and vegetables every day, a new study suggests that drinking too much orange juice may increase the risk of melanoma skin cancer.
The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by Dr. Abrar Qureshi from Brown University. The research involved analyzing the data collected from more than 100,000 adults from the United States who participated in a 25-year health study. According to what they found, about 2% of the participants had been diagnosed with melanoma during the 25-years study.
Although the study suggests a low risk of skin cancer overall, the researchers say it’s still about 36% higher especially among the participants who ate or drank at least six ounces of citrus juice or citrus fruits at least twice a day, compared to those who did not consume it more than two times a week.
The scientists noted that those who drank the most orange juice or ate the most grapefruit had an increased risk of developing melanoma, while the participants who drank grapefruit juice or ate oranges did not have the same risk. Researchers said this is somehow unusual because grapefruits are known to contain a higher level of psoralens and furocoumarins than grapefruit juice.
Concerning the link between orange juice and melanoma, the scientists believe it could be simply because it is the preferred fruit drink of many people.
When they analyzed other fruits, vegetables to see if there is an association with melanoma, the researchers didn’t find any. Dr. Walter Willett, a scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health and the lead author of the study, said that further research is needed to determine if there is a cause-and-effect between citrus fruits and skin conditions. Dr. Willett explained that although fruits and vegetables are considered healthy and should be consumed on a regular basis, there are some that contain vey toxic compounds. He added that people should consume a varied diet, because too little or too much of something is never healthy.
Researchers advise people that variety is the best when it comes to food. By having a varied diet, people make sure they are not missing out on important food that brings a lot of health benefits.
Despite what the new study suggests, health experts still advise people to consume healthy amounts of fruits and vegetables and drink natural juices because they are packed with vitamins and minerals and other healthy substances.
