You might have heard about the mysterious ghost woman that has been spotted on Mars. Maybe you even heard about the crab-sight as well and maybe you actually believe that there is life on Mars because of these sights or because of other theories that have come before. But now we know for a fact that these sights are just our imagination playing games with us.
I’m am, if we can call it like that, an “extraterrestrial life believer” myself. I believe that there is something out there, but Mars has been demonstrated over and over again not to have any life on it. And we are going to walk through some of these facts together.
First of all, humans are not technologically or mentally inferior. We have had specialists looking at Mars for years on end and they only discovered some “sights” that could never be proven to be something consistent. We never found life on Mars specifically, we only saw some things that we wanted to see.
Secondly, we know for a fact that Mars is not in a Goldilocks Zone. What is a Goldilocks Zone? It is a “place” or, more specifically, an orbit on which a planet can rotate, which is not too close and not too far from a star, which in our case is the sun.
The Goldilocks Zone practically ensures that the planet has the right temperature to sustain life. The temperature during a Martian winter can drop down to -60 degrees Celsius on the hemispheres and it can drop to -125 degrees Celsius near the poles. During summer, temperatures peak 20 degrees Celsius close to the Equator.
Mars is just outside the Goldilocks Zone, which makes it very hard to sustain liquid water necessary for survival.
Now let’s get to the human imagination part. Science writer Jeffrey Kluger, who works at TIME, talked about a phenomenon called pareidolia.
Pareidolia makes us see things that are not really there. It is quite a normal phenomenon, in fact. Humans are curious, they want to seek knowledge and they want to believe that they have found something. So they seek knowledge ever where there is none. It’s like looking up in the sky and seeing a plane which you think it’s an UFO.
While the fascination of extraterrestrial life is like a question that we so desperately want to answer, Mars does not seem to be the place we should turn our gazes towards. There is no crab and no woman. There’s only a human desire to find something we believe exists.
