The world of TV series and broadcasted movies has never been so successful in terms of revenue. HBO had the idea to launch a streaming replacement for cordcutters, offering you the possibility to watch your favorite TV shows without a cable subscription. The app was launched exclusively for Apple, with a 3 months mandatory subscription for iOS and Apple TV.
The great strategy behind it was an exclusive offer promoting free subscriptions for one month, which allowed users to pamper themselves with the sweet entertaining taste of TV shows and Box Office movies.
The month after its launch, sales and market reach met a record. HBO Now, the app dedicated to iOS and Apple TV was reported to be number one on the Worldwide May iOS revenue charts. Also, it became the No.2 Overall daily grossing ranked app in the US on May 7.
Of course it did, as we all want to see what the deal with Game of Thrones is and we have all been eagerly waiting for True Detective to come up with the second season. The HBO Now app was probably the greatest idea the Home Box Office could have come with, as watching TV series and movies is the easiest and most affordable way to spend our happy hours.
HBO Now costs $14.99 per month and users are willing to pay the right price for their fragment of entertainment. The partnership with Apple gave it a quality stamp and now HBO owns the most profitable iOS app.
The service provides entire access to HBO original programming and movies, content that in the past was available only to those who subscribed to HBO through their cable providers. Some past shows were also available for streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video but without such an echo of success.
With HBO Now, viewers have access to all HBO’s content, whether past or current, plus a selection of movies, especially curated and selected for all the HBO consumers out there.
Game of Thrones is now the most debated subject on all media channels, and HBO came up with the greatest idea when launching the app for Apple users that can watch their favorite series on a diversity of media channels.
App store analytics firm App Annie has been doing some serious research and analysis over the performance of these new services and reported that there is an increasing consumer appetite for subscription-based streaming video services. Hulu, for instance, has met an increase in revenue and scored the 7th position on the Worldwide iOS revenue chart.
