When was the the last time you went to a hospital and stayed there overnight? If it was recently, you might want to go and have yourself checked for any other infections, because hospitals are not so clean as you think they are.
This is not a major source of panic, but it is not something that you want to ignore either. A new study shows that cleaning procedures in hospitals are not exactly consistent, thus leading to a number of infections after patients are told that their issues are solved and are sent home.
The new report pointed out a number of sanitation concerns that question whether you are actually healthier or not when you get out of a hospital. According to Philly.com, the people in charge with cleaning hospital rooms do not have the appropriate knowledge of how it should be done. Needless to say, this also leads to the wrong practice.
There is no research and no proper education system as to how to keep a patient’s room sanitized, and the members of the Department of Health and Human Services who investigated the matter seemed quite shocked with the face that there is no proper lecture on the subject.
According to the same department, around one in every 25 patients contracts a hospital-related infection. This is only the beginning, as it turns out to be a giant snowball effect: in 2011, around 721,000 such infections were reported and 75,000 people died as a result.
It is quite a shocking truth to know that people went to the hospital to get better and died as a consequence.
The current available literature mainly reinforces hand washing in order to prevent germs. However, there is little to no attention given to how every surface should be washed at the appointed time. Germs can be spread if hands get in contact with toilets, call buttons, beds, counters, trays and they are even spread through the air.
The majority of texts written on how to take care of the hospital’s environment are only centered on one method, while casually explaining others without giving them any importance. A good approach would be to present all possible ways to clean a room efficiently and comparing them instead of just telling people to wash their hands all the time.
The hospital needs to be a very clean environment, despite the number of people working there or coming in for daily checkups. The study does have one major benefit: it informs authorities who will most likely begin to study the situation more in depth.
