FDA labeled GMO salmon safe to eat and said that the fish is quite nutritious.
Aquabounty, company centered on biotechnology, recently received the seal of approval from the Food and Drugs Administration. The GMO salmon was labeled safe to eat and was even considered to be quite nutritious.
For some time now (almost 20 years), Aquabounty has struggled against both FDA and local food organizations regarding the ethics behind commercializing genetically engineered salmon. After multiple clashes with the FDA, the latter admitted that the genetically altered sea critter poses no threat to health. Thus FDA officially recognized the GMO salmon is safe to eat and authorized Aquabounty to begin shipping procedures.
When or where the mutant fish will hit the markets we cannot speculate. What we do know is that people have begun to form camps. Some of them vote in favor of this type of fish, saying that it could hold the same nutritional values as the common stream salmon, while a vast majority are in favor of boycotting Aquabounty’s interests.
Many of those who chose to side with the other camps are conjuring up arguments regarding how the stock of mutant fish could endanger salmon population. Aquabounty came to assure the public that such a thing is highly unlikely. They declared that the breeding facility is equipped with failsafe devices, capable of ensuring that the stock won’t leave the enclosure. If this would happen, the local salmon population will not be in danger because, as Aquabounty argued, both male and female GMO salmon are incapable of breeding, due to the fact that they were genetically engineered to be sterile.
Although there is much discontent among the public regarding Aquabounty’s decision to make GMO salmon, FDA said that both customer and producer must be granted with a choice Thus, Aquabounty is free to produce its GMO salmon, while the lone customer is entitle to choose between buying and not buying this type of salmon. Also, the FDA recommends that all supermarket who choose to receive GMO salmon should label all their fish, branding them either natural of genetically altered.
Meanwhile, Aquabounty is preparing its first stock of fish for shipping. As we mentioned, we cannot say for sure when the GMO salmon will hit the market but, rest assured, once it does, many shots will be fired.
On account of the possible salmon get-away, Aquabounty stated that it is practically impossible for the salmon to escape from the enclosures, due to the fact that the company took extra precautions in order to assure the facility’s security.
