The mother and two other survivors are currently in the hospital in critical condition after sustaining major injuries from the fire, health experts say.
At around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 12th, firefighters responded to a fire that started at a Baltimore three-story family house. Neighbors who witnessed the tragedy say that the family had no chance of surviving the fire, so hot that parts of a car parked nearby started to melt.
However, the mother and three children managed to escape the inferno. Nevertheless, it was little cause for celebration for the Malone family as six of their children could not be saved. The victims were 3-yearl-old twin girls, two boys aged 9 months and 2 years, and another 10-year-old and 11-year-old girls, according to Chief Roman Clark, fire department spokesman.
As of this point, there is no telling what might have been the cause of the horrific fire. While the firefighters were kept at a distance, trying to contain the fire, one story collapsed entirely, while the second one was barely holding on.
The survivors were rushed to the hospital. Health officials told reporters the mother and two children were in critical condition. However, the family’s 8-year-old girl who helped rescue her younger brother was discharged shortly after.
According to local authorities, the father was not home because he was at work at the time of the tragedy. Still in shock, he managed to give out a statement saying he does not know what could have caused the fire. However, Roman Clark told authorities the man told him he had recently changed a smoke detector’s batteries in the house.
Robert Spencer, who lives across the street said he witnessed the children playing on the porch of their home oftentimes in the past. On Thursday morning, however, he told reporters how he woke up to the children’s cry for help from within the house engulfed in flames. He said he wanted to help with the rescue, but the flames spread too fast and there was no way of getting near the house.
“There was just too much fire there”, said Robert Spencer.
According to multiple other witnesses’ accounts, neighbors one block away said they have never seen such a devastating fire like the one who claimed the lives of almost an entire family.
