Facebook Is Launching A Friendly Initiative
Facebook is launching a friendly initiative called TechPrep. TechPrep is a way in which the social media giant is telling the world that computer science is not as unwelcoming as it seems and that they can fully dive into the experience if they wish to. It is also an anti-racism movement, enabling anybody, regardless of race, to see what computer science is all about and how you can develop within the field.
TechPrep is actually a website which has support in both English and Spanish and works like a guide for children and parents who want to go for a ride in the IT field. Nothing too complicated about it. It shows you what jobs you can acquire in IT, what expertise you need for anything you might be interested in, where you can start from and where you might want to end up.
After it was announced on Tuesday, Facebook declared that it wants to “widen the pipeline” for anybody who does not necessarily have access to IT, but wants to know what happens behind the curtains. The truth is that the field is not exactly accessible to any human being. The amount of work and procedures can be baffling and sometimes confusing. A guide is exactly what the world needs.
The Facebook Global Director of Diversity, Maxine Williams, was also kind enough to explain that Facebook wants to create an “inclusive culture”. This only serves as proof that Facebook is a company that is willing to look beyond any kind of cultural barrier. While society, even if educated, still blocks certain cultures geographically, Facebook wants to be done with it once and for all. Development is done with all people, not just some “exclusive” ones.
Surprisingly, research showed that black people and Hispanics are looking forward to a career in IT, but they are often pushed back by the procedure barrier, so to speak. They simply do not know what to do and there are not many people willing to help either. So Facebook took the initiative and built this site for them. Hopefully, the interest of others might be rewarded appropriately from now on.
So now that Facebook is launching a friendly initiative called TechPrep, it is time we welcomed absolutely everybody who wants to become an IT specialist. Facebook actually did an amazing thing with the side that deserves recognition: they made the world bigger.
