Depression is now far from being just another topic that breaks the ice of social interaction habits across bourgeois societies. People who used to be unsatisfied about their lives are oftentimes calling themselves depressed but the affection seems to have developed into a monster that eats minds and hearts alive. The most dramatic aspect of depression is that sometimes gets us in a denial state that blocks our vision and darkens our minds, making us unable to react in front of its symptoms.
A recent initiative states that a small fragment of our next visit to the family doctor should be spent filling out questionnaires in order to assess whether we suffer from depression. Furthermore, people who question their depressive state can be offered the option to download a questionnaire online, to fill it out and hand it over to their doctor for a relevant evaluation.
The highly chaotic world we are living in affects us to the point of losing our sense of reality. We are instead transported into a state of uncertainty, self-loath and sadness that keep us away from living life at its fullest. Depression has become the disease of our century and what’s more depressing than that is that its symptoms are relative, subjective and misleading and many of us fail to understand what is happening to us when depression takes over. In a recent recommendation released on Monday, the US Preventive Services Task Force stated that family doctors must regularly screen patients for depression using questionnaires that detect signs of the mental disorder.
Whenever a patient shows clear signs of depression, he or she must be transferred to a specialist for a relevant and expert diagnosis and treatment. Treatments for depression consist of medication, therapy or in more serious cases, a combination of the two.
Questionnaires are a very good idea, as many individuals get lost on the depression’s highway to hell. Standardized questionnaires offer a good helping hand in raising awareness over the matter and can easily be self-administered in a matter of minutes, with medical care representatives reviewing the results immediately after patients fill out the forms.
According to extensive studies, 7% of adults in the US suffer from depression but only half of them have been diagnosed with the condition. Questionnaires are surely designed to help a diagnosis but “these are not instruments that diagnose depression. They give clinicians the first indication of something that should be followed up on”, according to recent declarations coming from specialists.
