A new study showed that people who take calcium supplements could have a bigger risk of developing heart diseases. Despite this, those who get their calcium from their food actually have a lower risk of developing a heart disease.
These findings add up to a series of other studies that show that supplements can cause more problems.
“When it comes to using vitamin and mineral supplements, particularly calcium supplements being taken for bone health, many Americans think that more is always better,” study co-author Dr. Erin Michos, “But our study adds to the body of evidence that excess calcium in the form of supplements may harm the heart and vascular system.”
Information from 2,700 people was analyzed in the study. The persons were between 45 and 84 years old and they had to answer questions related to the calcium intake that they have no matter if it was from a supplement or from their diet.
The people who participated in this study underwent 2 CT scans, the first one was at the beginning and the other was 10 years after. The researchers took the CT scans in order to see if the persons had any calcium in their arteries. If a person has this problem it means that he can also develop a heart disease. At the first CT, 1,500 did not present any calcium-containing plaques.
After this, the people were dived in 5 groups by the researchers.
The finding showed people who eat food that contains more calcium had the lowest risk of developing a heart disease. Those who had a low intake from their food had a bigger risk of having a heart disease. The ones that had the biggest risk of developing a heart disease are the ones that took supplements.
The researchers mentioned that they only found a link between supplements and heart diseases and they can’t prove that taking any supplements can cause a disease. Also, the numbers may not be exact because the participants were the ones that reported the intake of supplements and it means that they could not have remembered the numbers right. The experts need to make more studies on this topic in order to prove a real association between these two.
