Few things are as elating as having a child. You know that you’re responsible for a new person, that your future actions will directly influence the futures of the infant you’re holding, as well as those of everyone it comes into contact with. It’s simply exhilarating.
But this is the real world, so joy doesn’t last long before giving way to a darker emotion. But sometimes, just sometimes, it happens the other way around. Grief gives way to joy and excitement. A couple from Alaska went through a rollercoaster of emotions, as their seven month old baby received last minute heart transplant.
Tiny Lincoln Seay was born last July with what was pretty much a death sentence. The doctors had detected even before he was born that he suffered from a congenital heart defect which caused his heart to be pointed towards the wrong side of his chest cavity.
They had even said he might not survive birth.
Lincoln’s mother confessed that the doctors weren’t very optimistic about the child’s chances of survival. In the meanwhile, the child needed several surgeries to keep his heart beating and his blood flowing. But nothing seemed to be working.
So, the parents were informed that their son would not make it without a heart transplant. As they heard that the biggest chances for Lincoln’s survival were if they moved from Alaska to Seattle, the parents unhesitatingly did just that. But as he was approaching the tender age of 2 months, Lincoln’s heart began to give out.
The couple went through several days of emotional devastation, as no transplant was in sight, and their son suffered a cardiac arrest. Luckily, the doctors were able to revive him, and this lasted for about another five months. In the meanwhile, Lincoln had turned a purple color that terrified his parents.
After five months, the infant’s heart was ready to give out once again, and this time for good. The parents had already accepted the idea that they wouldn’t find a donor and were wondering if they had any way to move on with their lives. And that’s when the miracle happened.
A transplant became available just as Lincoln was about to die. But things wouldn’t end there. The boy entered cardiac arrest just as he was being prepared for transplant, but the doctors managed to hook him to a bypass machine, completing a two hour operation in 12 minutes while performing CPR.
The surgery took a few hours, as a team of surgeons worked trying to give life to baby Lincoln. Finally, with the surgery over, the infant has to spend a few more days in the hospital in order for the doctors to make sure everything is ok. But the changes were immediate, as Lincoln turned a bright pink, healthy color.
In her final statement, the mother tried to raise awareness about organ donation and talked about the rollercoaster of emotions she’s been through:
I was shocked. I was elated. I was sad for the other family. I had every emotion you could think of.
