We are all familiar with age and its drawbacks as it moves on. Our body feels weak, the bones feel rusty and, most of all, our muscles are growing weaker and weaker. It is a discomforting sensation to know that what keeps you straight is falling apart, but there is a very efficient way to combat this discomfort: apple peel and green tomatoes. They are scientifically proven to help our muscles through the years.
Maybe apples are not such big news, after all. We’ve known that apples are always healthy for us and we even tell our children from a tender age that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. But green tomatoes? Who would have guessed that they can slow down our aging process? They both stand in the way of atrophy and muscle mass loss, so the more of them you eat, the younger you will be at 70.
So what is it exactly about apple peel and green tomatoes that helps us this much? A team of researchers within the University of Iowa wanted to find out themselves, so they conducted a study. They found out that there are two components within these two aliments that keep us going when we grow older: ursolic acid and tomatidine.
These two components work as a counter for genes that are activated by the ATF4. ATF4 activates them, the acid and the tomatidine deactivates them. So far, research has only proven that these two components work in mice. Thus, more research is required to ensure that humans can benefit from the same advantages.
Cristopher Adams, the senior study author, was kind enough to explain why these two lead to such advantages. Ursolic acid and tomatidine stop the activated gene, allowing the skeletal muscles to recover more effectively at an older age. It is this gene that impedes our bodies from feeling better, but if we turn it off, the body is able to withstand aging a lot better.
So if you are worried that you might get old and helpless in a few years, you can start eating green tomatoes and apples, apple peel more specifically. Tomatidine is found within the tomatoes, of course, and ursolic acid in the apple peel. If you do this regularly, you might end up running like a 30 year old when you turn 60 or 70, so there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t try it.
