The study suggests that the majority of rabies cases were caused by dog bites. Also, the researchers found that most of the deaths from rabies occur in India and Africa, while none in Israel.
Experts say that there is no known cure for rabies but its development can be prevented through immunization, only if detected in time.
More than 160 people die of rabies every day, according to the new study conducted by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control’s Partners for Rabies Prevention Group.
Israel is one of the countries that is not affected by rabies, suggests the new study, because the Health Ministry’s Epidemological Department is strictly monitoring the situation.
From 1953 to 1971, Israel had only four deaths caused by rabies, the Health Ministry officials said. For the next 15 years there were no rabies deaths reported, although the disease existed during this time.
Then, from 1996 to 2003, 4 people died of rabies, and in 2014 a woman died after she caught the disease in India.
Although the death rate is very low, health officials say that the disease does exist; the Health Ministry is working hard to prevent it.
For example, from 2010 to 2013, more than 57,000 people from Israel went to see the doctor for rabies prevention after they reported dangerous exposure to animals.
The experts say that one doesn’t have to bitten to the bone to catch the rabies virus, which is almost 100% lethal.
The new study suggests that the highest rates of death by rabies are in Saharan Africa and India.
In India, more than 20,000 people die every year after being infected with the rabies virus.
This happens because the dogs, which are the main carriers of the disease, are not vaccinated and health officials cannot control the spreading of the disease due to this fact.
Rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. Once inside the human body, it destroys the immune system, which is why in most of the cases the disease is fatal.
