The 2017 MTV VMAs are just a month and a day away and starting this week, voting is officially open. MTV also revealed this year’s nominations, and Kendrick Lamar is in full swing and top position. He is followed, with five nominations each, by Katy Perry and The Weekend.
Kendrick Lamar to be The Big Winner of the 2017 MTV VMAs?
This year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) could be very fruitful for Kendrick Lamar as the artist leads the nominations pack with eight. One of them places the singer in the race for the Artist of the Year award. The other seven revolve around his single “Humble” from Damn.
Katy Perry and The Weekend scored the same number of nominations, with Perry’s nods targeting several of her songs. The Weekend’s “Reminder” video, which comes packed with numerous cameo appearances, received nominations across several creative categories. Another nod for the artist will also place him in the race for one of the VMAs’ most desired trophy.
The 2017 MTV VMAs will come with a ‘new’ category, which tweaks their usual format. Instead of offering a Best Female or Best Male Video award, this has now been blended into a single one, the Artist of the Year recognition.
Seven artists will be looking to win this award, including Kendrick Lamar, The Weekend, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Lorde, and Arian Grande.
This year’s VMAs are also introducing a really new category, that of the Best Fight Against the System. It comes some two years after MTV decided to drop the Best Video with a Social Message category.
It has reportedly been added to “celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up against injustice.”
Several artists are included on the list of multiple nominations, for example, the mentioned Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Halsey, The Chainsmokers, Chance the Rapper, Calvin Harris, D.R.A.M., and Migos.
Starting this week, voting for the 2017 MTV VMAs is also open as well. Users interested will be able to vote in nine categories. These are Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best New Artist, and Best Fight Against the System Video. Best Rock Video, Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video, and Best Hip Hop Video are also on this list.
The full list of nominations is available on the MTV VMAs website. The VMAs will air live on August 27, 8 p.m. PT/ET, from the Forum in Los Angeles, California.
