Zika infected mosquitoes were found in Miami Beach. It seems that Florida has a big issue with mosquitoes. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture, this is the sixth time when infected mosquitoes are captured in Miami. Even though the authorities are doing their best, it is very difficult to catch all the mosquitoes, especially when the disease is spreading so fast.
Health officials tested almost 4 000 mosquito samples and only six of them were tested positive. We are talking here about samples, not about the number of mosquitoes. It seems that more than 64 000 mosquitoes were tested to find out if they are infected with the virus. Florida Department of Health tried to trap as many mosquitoes as possibles and intensified mosquito control.
The authorities eliminated Zika infected mosquitoes habitats, they treated water containers and provide outdoor insecticide to keep the danger away from people. Their efforts must be followed also by residents who have to pay more attention to the areas where mosquitoes could have their habitats.
We are expecting more inspections this month, especially after the outbreak from Miami Beach. Do not forget that Zika is not the only problem mosquitoes are responsible for. The West Nile Virus is also dangerous for humans. These two diseases have caused a lot of issues for humans and animals. Unfortunately, we do not have treatment for them so the best way to stay healthy is to prevent mosquitoes bites.
Zika virus was declared a public health emergency on February 3, 2016. Since them, more Zika infected mosquitoes were discovered in the state, especially in Miami Beach. Without the help of the people, the authorities will not be able to manage this situation.
Pregnant women are the most in danger because the virus can be passed to the baby. Zika is responsible for brain defects and those babies born with the disease will not have a chance to have a normal life. There is no evidence that breastfeeding is dangerous, so even mothers from areas where the virus was found are encouraged to breastfeed.
The biggest issue is that we have no treatment. Most people do not have symptoms so it is very hard to discover if they are sick. While researchers are trying to find a cure, the authorities try to kill the mosquitoes.
