People hurried to help the girl who was mauled in North Carolina shark attacks.
Two teenagers, a girl and a boy, were seriously injured in two separated North Carolina shark attacks that happened on Sunday in Oak Island.
The teenagers were attacked by sharks while they were out swimming in the ocean and lost parts of their bodies due to repeated bites.
According to local officials, on Sunday, at about 4:12 p.m. a girl was attacked by a shark and suffered serious bite wounds.
At about 5:51 p.m., along the same Oak Island beach, a 16 year old boy was also mauled by a shark in a different incident.
Martha Harlan, of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in North Carolina, offered an official statement about the incidents saying that both victims were airlifted to the nearest hospital where they received immediate medical attention.
Harlan said that both teenagers were in critical condition after the North Carolina shark attacks, but started getting better around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night.
According to Harlan, both victims lost parts of their limbs; the girl lost her arm below the elbow and the boy lost his arm below the shoulder.
The teenage girl had also serious bite wounds on her lower leg.
Both teenage victims were on vacation from out of town, the officials said.
Steve Bouer, one of the witnesses, said that he saw one of the North Carolina shark attacks unfold in front of his very eyes.
According to Bouer, people were shouting to the girl to get out of the water.
Several people rushed to help the girl and pulled her out of the water.
Bouer recounts the whole incident, saying that it was very much like one of the gruesome scenes from “Jaws”.
The town’s officials said that this type of shark attacks is not very common.
Oak Island officials say the beach is a very safe place and the terrible attacks are highly unusual.
Harlan said that this kind of shark attacks is very rare in this region.
Although the beaches will remain open, officials are warning people to remain on land and not go swimming in the water until everything is taken care of.
