One of the most popular microblogging social media platforms, Tumblr has made the news once again with the release of its much-anticipated Tumblr TV. No, it’s not a smart TV or a media streaming service, it’s the place where one can see thousands of the best GIFs. Many commented that the Tumblr TV will be the next favorite past time activity, because let’s be honest, who can say no to so many GIFs gathered in one single place?
We visited Tumblr TV and we were pleased to see it has a search engine where users can look for GIFs depending on what they want to see. They can click on a category marked with a hashtag and Tumblr will generate all the GIFs under that category. One of the best things about Tumblr TV is that we get to see all the GIFs in full-screen mode. It also offers controls like pause, play, backward and forward.
Another great thing about the Tumblr TV is that one doesn’t even have to have an existing Tumblr account to see the GIFs. Tumblr was already showing GIFs but it didn’t have the controls or the full-screen mode.
Users can search for GIFs after accessing Tumblr and they can also look for them using the GIFs URL. A small TV icon will appear above the search results and to get to the Tumblr TV one needs to click on that icon.
On Tumblr TV, all the GIFs are in full-screen mode and they play on a timed loop. After a few seconds of displaying a GIF, it automatically goes to the next. To see the GIF’s source, tags and player controls, one needs to move the cursor on the interface of the Tumblr TV. The user can pause, go back and forth with the GIFs, which makes it a more interactive experience.
According to Tumblr, the new “TV” was designed for expanding the access to its most popular feature, the GIFs. The new Tumblr TV is currently available only for desktops, but Tumblr officials said that they are planning to release it on mobile devices in the near future.
