Three-Year Old Who Was Diagnosed With Diabetes
Diabetes is a very difficult condition to go through. The lack of sugar makes the world a sadder place, but some can blame age and admit that growing older and not eating sugar can go hand in hand. Yet what happens when you are just a child? This is the tragic story of a three-year old who was diagnosed with diabetes at such a tender age and, because of the condition, she will never experience childhood the way we all did.
She is the youngest child with diabetes ever detected and scientists find it very odd that an obesity-related disease has been found so early in a human’s lifespan. What is more worrying is that the diabetes is in its second stage. This particular situation was associated with mid-age or elders up until now, but it seems like the condition is emerging in children now as well.
The discovery and all its details are going to be revealed in the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. The meeting will be held on Thursday night in Stockholm and Michael Yafi, from the University of Texas, will explain how this discovery was made and what scientists know about the condition.
It is impossible to generalize that this condition occurs on a regular basis since global registries have not been implemented yet. Yafi himself said that the research that he conducted did not reveal any cases that resemble this one. He is confident, however, that this is not the only exception and that there probably are others but they are either undiagnosed or not reported yet.
Diabetes is not an issue to be trifled with as the overall number of diabetics in the world is said to revolve around 387 million (2014) and forecasts show that it might spike to approximately 600 million by the end of 2013. This insight has been provided by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
Yafi pointed out that this is not a usual issue that doctors and patients could casually avoid. He declared that whenever he will see and obese child, he will also screen their parents for type 2 diabetes.
The unfortunate discovery should trigger a warning in our heads about how to stay healthy and educate our children for a healthier lifestyle. This seems to be the price that we have to pay for comfort and laziness. If we decide not to act, our children will have to suffer because of our laziness and desire to sit still as much as possible and move as little as possible.
