Now that NASA officially recognized the thirteenth zodiac sign, astrologers feel more compelled to add it to the traditional roster that is comprised out of only 12 signs.
Approximately 3,000 years ago, ancient Babylonians studied the sky and created maps of all the constellations they could identify with the naked eye.
Even though their level of technology or understanding of the universe was not very advanced, they did acknowledge the fact that the constellations play an important part in this universe, so they decided to attribute each of them to a zodiac sign.
The dynamic of the zodiac was rather simple, each month, a constellation was more visible, so they correlated the cluster of starts with the twelve divisions of the year. However, when November came, they were faced with a dilemma, having to choose between the Serpent Bearer and the Scorpio. As we all know, they chose the latter.
The second problem that arose was the fact that the constellations didn’t exactly align with the months inscribed in the calendar, so they had to make each sign fit into the calendar.
Now, after recalculating the astrological mathematics of the Babylonians, NASA devised a new zodiac sign dynamic, those who were previously Scorpio natives finding themselves as being fitted in the Ophiuchus category.
Capricorn: January 20 – February 16
Aquarius: February 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11 – April 18
Aries: April 18 – May 13
Taurus: May 13 – June 21
Gemini: June 21 – July 20
Cancer: July 20 – August 10
Leo: August 10 – September 16
Virgo: September 16 – October 14
Libra: October 14 – November 23
Scorpio: November 23 – November 29
Ophiuchus: November 29 – December 17
Sagittarius: December 17 – January 20
The constellation was first documented in written form in a poem by Marcus Manilius, Astronomica.
“Ophiuchus holds apart the serpent which with its mighty spirals and twisted body encircles his own so that he may untie its knots and back that winds in loops.”
Manilius also speaks about the astrological influence of the serpent bearer. It seems that when Ophiuchus is in its rising phase, people are more protected from poisons, and snake handlers have more success with their pets.
In the 21st century, those that identify with the sign are believed to be very sexual individuals with a strong mind and will. They can also be very stubborn.
