A team of scientists has conducted a recent study which suggested that some office workers frequently use a combination of legal and illegal drugs to increase productivity at the work place.
According to the researchers, the white-collar workers take these stimulants especially when they have to stay overtime and work under pressure.
The study revealed that some of the preferred drugs that contain amphetamine and others use prescription drugs recommended for patients who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.
The researchers believe that the office workers take these stimulants in order to do be more productive at the workplace.
The researchers have made a list of the prescription drugs taken by the workers; the list includes medication like Concerta, Adderall and Vyvanse.
The medical experts say that it’s extremely dangerous to misuse such drugs or to abuse illegal stimulants. These drugs can have very serious side-effects, such as anxiety, hallucinations and addiction.
Some of the office workers lie about their ADHD diagnoses in order to get hold of a prescription for these drugs, while others purchase them from illegal drug dealers that sell the stimulants on the black market.
The recent study found that not only office workers use these types of drugs. College students have also been using prescription drugs such as Adderall for years.
Dr. Wilson Compton, deputy director at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, explained that there has been an increase in the abuse rate among college students in the past several years.
According to Dr. Compton, it’s very important to understand the gravity of the situation and try to find a way to prevent it. He added:
“It is essential that we understand the outcomes as they leave college and assume adult roles.”
Some white-collar workers invoke the excuse that some of the legal stimulants they take are usually grouped as vitamins under the federal laws, which allow them to be distributed and purchased without the need of a prescription from the doctor.
Experts say that this is also a very dangerous habit.
The study suggests that some workers use Nootropics and similar drugs to increase their alertness and boost up their attention span during work hours. However, medical experts say that whoever is doing it should stop because they are endangering their health.
Most of these stimulants contain herb extracts, caffeine and amino acids that help boost the mental performance. Some of these can be found in online stores.
