We all know that smoking is an activity more and more people perform nowadays. They become so dependent that they smoke in the car and don’t take into consideration the fact that their own children may become ill because of the smoke.
Fortunately, a new law bans smoking in the car when children are also on board. However, the drivers will be given a period of time in order to get accustomed with the new law.
The law stipulates that the driver or any other person will get a £50 fine if caught smoking while having a person under 18 in the car.
The local authorities have the permission of enforcing the law, but they stated that it would be much better to firstly educate the drivers in this respect.
However, drivers should know that this law is not applicable to e-cigarettes.
While some people say the law is a good idea, others are against it, claiming that it is difficult to be enforced.
“Police forces will be following guidance by taking an educational, advisory and non-confrontational approach when enforcing the new legislation,” said a National Police Chiefs’ Council member.
According to a study made by the British Lung Foundation, almost 430,000 children get affected by smoke in their parents’ car weekly.
Among the diseases produced by second-hand smoking, there are asthma, cancer and pneumonia that may affect a child’s life.
Amanda Wright, a member of the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, stated that this measure is most welcomed, as it will protect children from chronic diseases. She also talked about the importance of protecting the health of generations that are to come.
Certain studies revealed that second hand smoking brings almost 9,500 children into hospital and causes almost 40 deaths per year. That’s because their immune system is not as developed as that of an adult, which makes them more vulnerable.
Moreover, a recent test revealed that smoking in the car can be bad for children even with the open windows. The level of chemicals is 100 times higher than the normal limit. With closed windows, the level doubles.
As a matter of fact, send hand smoking comprises 4,000 chemicals, 50 of which can produce cancer.
