An anonymous essay revealing outrageous acts of sexual assault in operating rooms was published in Annals of Internal Medicine’s journal.
The essay was written by a physician and it is a detailed description of the horrifying stories of two women who have been sexually assaulted while being unconscious in the operating room.
In the first story, the physician says one doctor was preparing a woman for a vaginal hysterectomy and started joking about the patient actually enjoying it.
The second story explains the case of an obstetrician who saved a woman that was bleeding heavily after giving birth. After he saved her life, he started preforming an obscene dance.
Annals of Internal Medicine is a publication established by the American College of Physicians and it has a history of writing technical articles regarding medical research since 1927.
This type of article is unusual for such a prestigious journal. Still, they decided to publish the anonymous essay and stated their reasons for doing so in a letter that was published along with it.
The letter says that everyone on the editorial team believed the essay was “disgusting and scandalous” and they took the risks into consideration. They knew that if the information reached the public it could ruin the profession’s reputation. Still, some of the members saw this as a reason why they mustn’t publish it, while other saw it as a reason to make it public.
In the end, the editorial team agreed that they have to publish the essay in order to reveal the dark secrets of medicine.
The team mentioned their point of view tregarding the incidents described in the essay. They believe that the first incident shows an act of disrespect and misogyny, while the second one is even worse because it is full of racism and sexual assault.
The practicing physician who wrote the essay is currently affiliated with a medical school. He wanted the essay to be published with his name on it, but the editorial team thought it would be better if they would just make it anonymous. They wanted to protect him, the patients and any other people who could have been identified if his name was made public.
The author found out about the first story while teaching at the medical school. In the second story he was one of the viewers who didn’t speak up against the doctor. Still, he doesn’t make any personal judgement about any of the events.
