Global warming is literally the hottest topic in the news these days. The papal frenzy just comes from getting a bit shadowed by another celebrity reaction that touches the delicate climate change base. Robert Redford seems to be deeply concerned about the future of mankind and he is making efforts to letting the mankind know about his personal concerns.
The highly acclaimed, Oscar winning actor Robert Redford calls for immediate action on climate change. He adressed the UN Monday and urged worldwide leaders to take action and to adopt climate agreement at the following global climate conference in December. Well, this was already planned by the top leaders of the world, but a little bit of PR never harms celebrities.
Redford spoke of himself as “an actor by trade but an activist by nature”.
It seems that our deeply disturbed world is rather concentrating on the large scales than the roots of the matter. Of course climate change is a deeply important issue, affecting our lives on different levels, but apart from that, each and every one of us can do little things to improve their lives and improve the quality and endurance of nature at a large scale. Powers combined can do more than motivational speeches.
Robert Redford is one of the greatest celebrities worldwide, famous for playing and directing a large number acclaimed movies that turned into classics. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Way We Were are only a couple of examples from the extended list of box office successes and classic references.
Redford felt that his actor and director etiquettes are no longer enough for his giant personality and decided to become an environmental activist after observing the high levels of air pollution in LA, which climbed at a dramatic rate after WWII.
His work as an environmental advocate extended over a period of 40 years, and now feels the peril is greater than ever and “the time for half measures and climate denial is over”.
Well, it’s been over for quite some time now, but the topic has never seen such popularity. Of course measures must be taken and regulations must be decided upon urgently, but we must all become aware that climate change lays in our hands. Global warming depends not only on UN decisions but rather on civic attitudes regarding the ever going development of industries that swallow us alive. A more responsible attitude towards nature coming from each and every one of us, who are in greater numbers than official regulators, could really make a difference. Power plays with power variables and no matter the decisions coming from top leaders that have the right to decide for and instead of us, we must all be aware that the responsibility is always ours and ours alone, no matter the other factors. This may be considered an idealistic point of view, but on the other hand we can seldom expect others to take the right decisions instead of us.
Robert Redford managed to raise the levels of awareness on the topic but addressing an institution is not enough. First and foremost, people all over the world must understand that sometimes ignorance is not bliss and can hold consequences on a dramatic level. The endearing actor turns into another famous face that offers a public reaction to an issue that for the time being is pretty far from change.
