2015 FBI official reports, and also the latest, show that out of a grand total of 5,850 cases of hate crimes, 513 were aimed at Caucasians. In percentage points, this translates as 10.5 percent of all reported hate crimes. However, authorities say that opposed to anti-black crimes, racially motivated attacks on whites still remain a small percentage of overall hate crimes.
According to the same official reports compiled in 2015, about 30 percent of all reported incidents, or 1,745 hate-related crimes have been linked to crimes committed against African Americans. Also, Jews were the most targeted group of 2015. However, because states can choose whether to submit hate crimes-related reports for federal count, it is not clear how many individuals have been subjected to racially motivated attacks. The FBI encourages states across America to submit hate crimes reports, even if they list zero incidents.
In 2015, for example, Miami has reported no hate crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, the director of the California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, Brian Levin questions the veracity of the report.
“I doubt that cities as diverse as those had no crime rates”, said Brian Levin.
Recently a mentally challenged man was brutally assaulted by four African American individuals with ages between 18 and 24. The attackers were two 18-year-old males and two sisters, Brittany and Tanishia Covington, aged 18 and 24. The horrific beating was broadcasted on social media, via Facebook Live.
The video shows the 18-year-old Caucasian victim tied up while the suspects are making references to his mental capacity and addressing racial slurs, according to Kevin Duffin, Chicago Police Commander. The four suspect now face battery and kidnapping charges, after they forcefully made their victim kiss the floor and drink toilet water. The video also shows how the assailants forced a sock into the mentally challenged victim’s mouth, binding his hands with a belt, and taping his mouth shut.
According to the authorities, the 18-year-old victim suffers from attention-deficit disorder and schizophrenia. Brian Levin believes the Chicago incident is drawing attention because it was streamed on social media, intensifying racial relations following the November election. He added that he never witnessed such brutality before.
