Black Bear Attracted by Bird and Deer Feeders, Michigan DNR Revealed
The incident, which occurred earlier this month, comes to show that there’s nothing a dog owner wouldn’t do to protect his bow-wow chum.
The protagonist of this savory tale, who preferred to keep his anonymity, told a local news outlet that on the day of the encounter he did not spot anything out of the unusual in his backyard.
At around 4:30, the man opened the back door to let his beagle come inside. However, seconds later, he spotted a shadow-like figure moving slowly through the bushes.
When he approached his dog, a black bear sprung out of the bushes and lunged towards the dogs. The man told the Michigan Department of Natural Resources agents that he spent some time trying to make the black bear back off.
He also said that his beagle somehow managed to get his leash tangle while barking at the massive animal. After a couple of minute of kicking and screaming, the individual managed to get the dog’s leash untangle and to make the bear leave.
Conclusion
However, instead of running back to the woods, the black bear charged towards the two, biting the beagle in the process.
The homeowner then punched the bear in his nose. It would appear that the hit was more than enough to scare away the black bear. He later took his dog to the vet.
A Michigan DNR spokesperson said that black bear attacks are rare by not unheard of.
