Obama On Mass Shootings
If there is one thing that Obama does right, it is caring for our country. Not everybody likes him, not everybody agrees with him, but after the mass shootings that took place, you can actually see that he cares. The emotional speech that he gave on the first of October touched many hearts, but it also revealed a truth that we need to deal with: gun-safety laws.
It is no surprise that many people agree with him on the matter, especially because mass shootings occur way too often in our country. His speech, although political, showed the country that, beyond having millions of supporters, beyond being the president of one of the world’s greatest countries, Obama is a human being and he empathized with the feelings of others.
But there are people who are questioning his position in this entire context. Some say that the President of the United States is not just a man who should give in to his feelings, but only seek solutions to the problems that the country is facing. And while their view is completely understandable, Obama showed us that he can be more than just a president.
If you watched his speech, you know that he was asked twice during the press conference that followed the next day about what he was going to do about it instead of just coming in front of the people and bashing at those who were responsible and acknowledging that there is a problem. Everybody can do that, but the president has to come up with solutions.
But people must understand that this is not a matter as simple as it seems. The President of the United States is backed up by a team of experts whom he talks to and whom he organizes following events so that the one that occurred in Oregon cannot repeat itself. But we live in a democratic world in which all subjects are put up for debate.
If Obama would force authorities into strengthening the laws that we currently have, he would be no better than a dictator. We cannot have the police roaming around the streets “enforcing the law” because that would not lead to any positive conclusion. From that moment, there would be on more step to dictatorship, something that we have learned from a long time ago.
This is why Obama said that he wants “to make it political”. Because if the issue is political, everybody is involved in it. The truth is that it is not Obama’s job to eliminate mass shootings. It’s our job as a nation to do so.
