The new Apple pencil is a scam. We cannot put it in other words in order to simplify it. Apple’s big announcement for its new iPad Pro was nothing more than a $100 pencil. Outrageous is a mild term for the entire thing, especially after Ikea came in hard on Apple, making fun of this ridiculous product. Ikea and Apple have had their clashes before, but this one is as awesome as it can get.
After Apple announced their brand new Apple Pencil, Ikea saw it fit to make their own commercial version, showing a hand using a normal pencil Branded Ikea. The tagline was “Absolutely familiar. Entirely free.” What is so hilarious about this is that it is actually true. This is a pencil that Ikea gives at their shop entrances for free but, if you really want to, you can buy it from Apple for $100.
This wasn’t the time the first time Apple was ridiculed in front of the world. Last year Ikea poked them by releasing the famous “Bookbook”, a print furniture catalog which is very well-designed, flexible, can give you all the information you need about Ikea products and, you guessed it, it is entirely free. Needless to say, it was just a joke ad, but it points out at how ridiculously expensive “normal products” from Apple are.
And it is impossible to dodge the bullet for so long and not admit it: Apple just is just selling us things that have been on the market for years for extreme prices. This pencil, which is basically a stylus, has been around for so long that you can get almost for free, if not entirely free, and now Apple expects to sell a $100 stylus?
And this was not the only normal object with an impressive ad promoted by Apple. If you remember the iPhone 5C, the ad featured a laughable line: “you will never see plastic designed like this anywhere else”. Stop for a second, think about it and understand how hilarious this entire thing is. “You’ve never seen plastic designed like this anywhere else.” This is why you should give Apple an extra $100 for their services.
All in all, it is high time that we understood the company for what it really is. Apple brings no innovation to the smartphone market anymore. It is just waiting for new products to emerge, then it waits for another few years so that the products become inexpensive, then they make the same products, brand them Apple and sell them for high prices. Why not get 10 free pencils from Ikea and save $100?
