On Friday, the Kenner authorities arrested a 33-year-old Metairie machete man who allegedly tried to snatch two toddlers from a Walmart. Allegedly, the suspect threatened to kill the kids’ mothers if they did not comply.
Metairie Machete Man Subdued by Employees and Off-Duty Police Officers
According to the Kenner Police Department, the event occurred in the Walmart Supercenter located on the 8912 Veterans Boulevard, on the 23rd of March, at approximately 2:00 p.m. The entire incident was captured by the store’s surveillance system.
The authorities reveal that at around that hour, 33-year-old Billy Yoe Budier-Herrera entered the store, with a black backpack casually thrown over the shoulder. Without ever pretending to browse the wares, the man went straight to a mother who was shopping with her 2-year-old child.
Allegedly, Budier-Herrera told the woman to keep quiet and follow her instructions because her life depended on it. Hearing Budier-Herrera’s threats, the woman tried to get away from him. However, the man blocked her way and brandished a machete, telling her that he will kill her child if she did not obey his commands.
While the woman screamed for help, the Metairie machete man grabbed the toddler, stuffed him into a shopping cart and tried to get out of the store. Fortunately, the woman managed to pull the child from the cart and sought refuge behind a deli counter.
At that point, several Walmart employees began pursuing the suspect. The man ran to the meats aisle where he tried to snatch a second toddler from a woman’s cart but was stopped by the child carrier’s safety belt.
With a second failed attempt, the Metairie machete man was subdued by Walmart employees and an off-duty police officer. A search revealed that apart from the machete, the man also had a shiv and a can of pepper spray.
