The Florida authorities claimed that a 40-year-old man whose body was recently washed ashore in the wake of Hurricane Irma might have ceased this opportunity to bludgeon her mother before committing suicide. IDing the body prove to be problematic as it spent at least a couple of days submerged.
Hurricane Irma -The Perfect Opportunity to Stage Horrific Murder
On Wednesday, an St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office spokesperson declared that the authorities are about to conclude the investigation in 40-year-old Lance Whatley’s case, the man believed to have used Hurricane Irma as a cover for murdering his 67-year-old mother.
According to Ken Mascara, the St. Lucie Sheriff, Whatley, who was previously diagnosed with several chronic mental illnesses, was feeling restless on the night he heard that Hurricane Irma hit the United States’ coasts.
He was at home with Kathie Whatley, his mother, who attempted to calm him down. However, seeing that the man could not be reasoned with, Mrs. Whatley began arguing with him over his behavior. At that point, as the authorities presume, the man became violent.
Whatley grabbed a hammer from another area of the house and hit his mother over the head several times. Realizing his deed, Whatley jumped into his mother’s car and drove to North Folk, an area near the St. Lucie River.
There, he stood a while, probably considering his course of action, went back into his car, drove over the railing and straight into the St. Lucie River.
The Florida authorities would discover Mrs. Whatley’s corpse on the 9th of September. Four days would pass until Whatley’s body will be located, being washed ashore by the receding waters.
According to the coroner’s office, identifying the body proved to be a challenging endeavor, as it was missing both hands and its head.
