Privacy issues are being addressed with the new feature from Google.
Following the profile model of Facebook, online users will have improved privacy with About me page from Google. In the current state of uncertainty regarding private data, big online companies are trying to cope with the theft of information. Google for instance has made changes in the past in its privacy policy, but many people still believe it is not enough. Along with Apple, Google has received negative comments in the recent light of events and has decided to upgrade its privacy policy by introducing an About me page for its users.
This page includes personal data about Google users, such as gender, date of birth, current location, education, workplaces and contact information. At the moment it is included within Google Circles, but we can expect a separation as it has happened before with Google Photos. “About Me” can be accessed from a dashboard, also used for other features. Apparently the changes made here will also influence other Google services, like Google+, Photos, YouTube or Drive.
Furthermore, the page has to option to control what personal information other people can see about the user. There is an option to hide each item separately, so the users can decide what they want to display on their profiles and what should be private. It is also worthy to mention that with the Privacy Checkup tool, one can also control their privacy settings on other features by Google, like Youtube for instance. The new Google feature can be accessed through AboutMe.Google.com, where you might have to surprise to find some information already written. Fear not, this data is not visible to other users unless you access Google+.
The page was firstly spotted by a blog about Google which is however unofficial. They also reported that there are current works on replacing the profiles of Google+. This is not the first step Google has taken in this direction, as it is also working on a special feature that would allow its users to view profiles anonymously. As people are becoming more concerned about the confidentiality of their lives, the improved privacy with About me page from Google is only one of the changes that are going to take place.
