(The Monitor Daily, US) – A team of British scientists has managed to achieve a new state of hydrogen via a lab experiment involving diamonds and massive pressure. Hydrogen reaches Phase V with diamonds, a state that has been theorized in the early ‘30s.
The University of Edinburgh proudly announces that the experiment involving the creation of solid hydrogen was successful. Prompted by the early theories on the fifth state of carbon, the scientists working on the project managed to create a new state of hydrogen using diamonds and high pressures.
Scientists managed to squeeze into a diamond matrix several atoms of hydrogen. When in contact with the crystalline structure and subjected to high pressures, hydrogen exhibits never before seen properties. Basically, in Phase V (the name given to the new state), hydrogen transforms from a gas into a solid, crystalline compound.
According to the team of scientists, a pressure of approximately 350 Gigapascals was required to achieve Phase V of hydrogen. The pressure needed to turn hydrogen into a crystalline structure is 3 million times over that of our Earth’s atmosphere. This kind of pressure can only be found inside our Sun and in the core of other planets such as Jupiter and Saturn.
A team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh declared that their newest experiment has yielded some unexpected results: hydrogen reaches Phase V with diamonds. According to their appraisal of the situation, the new compound could fuel a new era of technical marvels.
Given its properties, the new solid state carbon can be used in order to create super jet fuel or superconducting computer components.
There were other experiments involving hydrogen. For example, creating liquid hydrogen has become very common nowadays. Hydrogen, in its liquid state, can be used to power rockets or submarines.
In order to achieve liquid hydrogen, scientists must subject normal hydrogen to high pressures for it to change states. From here, there are only a few steps towards creating Phase V. However, up until now, researchers haven’t found a way to cool the hydrogen enough in order to solidify it.
This discovery has prompted numerous others debate about cosmology and about what goes on beneath a planet’s crust. Hydrogen, being one of the building blocks of life, is a true landmark when it comes to studying atomical structures.
