How Will The Arkham Series Continue?
How will the Arkham series continue? Now that Batman: Arkham Knight has finally launched (with a few remaining bugs, glitches and whatnot), it is time for us to think about what can be done for the future of these games. The story has come to a conclusion, which will be completed with the last DLC in January, but does this have to be the end?
The Arkham games really deserve credit for the level of creativity and depth that has been given to them. Hardly have any Batman games been ever done with such great style and attention to detail, not to mention the good stories. It would be a shame for it all to end here, so we wonder: what else could we explore, Batman or Bruce Wayne, which could immerse players more into the arkhamverse.
Since the ending is pretty clear now, we assume that creators could go back in time and create some awesome games with older villains or more complicated scenarios. Getting Joker out of the way would be a start. There has literally been too much Joker in the arkhamverse, spoilt or not and fans would love to see a transition to something less commercial, more oldschool.
What if we got a history with Penguin? Or with Clayface? Maybe a proper encounter with Mr. Freeze would also make matters very interesting since he has such a “human” desire to save his wife. They can integrate the Joker in these sort of games, but only as a minor hint that he exists in the world, nothing too close and personal. As long as everything is centered on another bad guy, we are fine with it.
Or could we get Bruce’s first meeting with the League of Shadows? Bruce finally meets Ra’s al Ghul. That would be an interesting game. Which would also shed some light into this “universe of failure” that Bruce has had to go through before becoming Batman. He was not born epic. He was trained and had to face a bitter life until he became the legend that everyone knows.
How will the Arkham series continue? Just as it always has. But what we need now is not a ton of more action. The action needs to be there for the “fill in”. What we need is the story because this is what makes Batman a great legend: the story and the lessons learnt from it. Even those learn the hard way.
