Specialists are still trying to establish how much water people should drink on a daily basis.
Most people have tried to live a healthier life by following a particular diet or exercising more. However, quite a lot of them fail to consider that drinking enough water is a thing that could help them. Considering the fact that our bodies are made from 60% water, people should focus more on what they drink than what they eat, believe some specialists.
A recent report from the National Institutes of Health shows that most of our organs including the heart, brain, and lungs are made from water. Apart from being more than 50% of our body, H2O is also the one that helps us regulate our temperature, forms saliva, and flushes waste. There is no debate whether or not water is essential for our health.
Despite this, there is little evidence about how much water people should drink every day, on average, to remain healthy.
How Much Water Should a Person Drink Daily, on Average?
“[…] there are major gaps in knowledge related to measurement of total fluid intake, hydration status at the population level, and few longer-term systematic interventions and no published random-controlled longer-term trials,” writes a NIH study.
Most guidelines insist that at least eight glasses of water should be consumed every day. This amounts to about 1.9 liters.
Apparently, that is a wrong answer. According to a recent review of a series of studies published in 2002, there is no evidence to back up these guidelines.
One of the problems with them is that people don’t accumulate water only by drinking it. The food they eat is another source of water.
Vegetables and fruits contain this liquid in a proportion of 80-90%. Other non-alcoholic drinks also incorporate it as well. So, by combining all of these sources, how much is enough?
According to the latest theory, women seem to consume about 2.7 liters of water every day. These accumulate from all the foods and beverages. Men seem to drink around 3.7 liters on a daily basis.
Still, all of these are general guidelines and have no scientific background. Experts mentioned that everybody is different. This is why people need to know their body and drink water everytime they feel thirsty.
Also, specialists recommend that people who exercise a lot drink more water than the average consumer. All in all, there is no special formula, but you need to stay hydrated at all times.
