These days a guide for quitting smoking is available in the form of the great smoke out of the U.S., titled as “Great American Smokeout”. It remains to be seen whether it will achieve success or not, given the large number of smokers, as well as the numerous methods of quitting.
The guide is the idea of the Society for American Cancer, and its purpose is to convince citizens to choose healthy lifestyles in order to avoid possible cancer. The initiative was born in the light of lung cancer being the deadliest type of cancer among the ranks of both men and women. Even though the numbers have recorded a positive drop over the past fifty years, it still remains the most common type of cancer.
Setting aside the cancer problem, smoking is also to blame for the clogging of blood vessels, the malfunctioning of the lungs and heart, and also contributes to risks of diabetes.
It is well known that one person who just put out his or her cigarette gets healthier by each passing minute. 12 hours after smoking the last cigarette, the level of carbon monoxide in the blood manages to return to normal. The problem is that another cigarette follows soon and thus it gets hard to escape from the cycle of addiction. It has been reported that 5 years after quitting, the risk of bladder, mouth, throat or esophagus cancer are reduced to half.
Out of the about 68% of the 42 million smokers in the U.S. who declare that they wish to quit, only 10% manage to actually do so.
As most smokers feel the need to light a cigarette after seeing someone else smoking or after inhaling the smoke from a cigarette, the “Stay away from smokers” app was designed to help them. The app also includes other features such as setting a date and a reason for quitting.
Another service for people who want to quit smoking is Quitline. The telephone service is free and provides help with planning and coaching the process, but also free nicotine patches under certain conditions.
If the great smoke out of the U.S. manages to convince more people to quit smoking, it will be a great step against cancer in general, as about 171,000 people are expected to die this year due to cancer related diseases.
