Goucher College revokes Cosby’s honorary doctorate due to the ongoing scandal he is involved in, with accusations of sexual violence. The college says the decision to revoke Bill Cosby’s honorary doctorate is very reasonable in light of the accusations made against him, stating that sex scandals violate the institution’s values.
Goucher is the second college to follow suit, after Tufts University had also withdrawn Bill Cosby’s honorary doctorate of arts which was awarded to him in 2000. They also handed him an award for excellence in children’s media later in 2011.
Baltimore’s Goucher College gave the honorary degree to Cosby when he was commencement speaker, back in 2001. Alumni, professors and students of Goucher College alike have praised the administration’s decision, saying it was the right thing to do.
The board of trustees at Tufts University has issued a statement, in which it claimed there was “substantial basis” to take credit away from the accomplishments for which Cosby was recognized and awarded his accolades to begin with. However, the board said it only reached the decision after a lengthy and serious consideration, taken into account all details of the scandal.
President of Tufts University Anthony Monaco has also said in an email sent to students, alumni and professors that Cosby has shown “a lack of character and integrity,” in direct contradiction with the school’s values.
Goucher College President Jose Antonio Bowen has stated that the school’s trustees met on Wednesday and “unanimously decided that Cosby’s admitted actions are in direct violation of values Goucher holds dear, including our community principles of respect, communication, and responsibility.”
Many other colleges and universities have previously revoked their honorary degrees offered to Cosby, including Brown, Fordham, Marquette, Baylor and Wilkes University from Pennsylvania. Cosby himself was also a member of the board of trustees at Temple University in Pennsylvania. However, he was forced to resign in December last year amid the accusations of sexual assault made against him.
He was also renounced and condemned by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Cosby had previously earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in education over there.
Cosby made a name for himself as a beloved comedian and actor, known for his work on The Cosby Show, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, as well as Kids Say the Darndest Things. However, since last year in particular, he has taken the spotlight of infamy as 54 women have accused Cosby of sexual assault, battery and misconduct.
