Escaped criminal David Sweat was finally apprehended by police forces after a three week manhunt following his and Richard Matt’s escape from a Dannemora’s Clinton Correctional Facility.
Sweat was identified by a New York Police sergeant who was on patrol on a road close to the city of Malone, at which point he tried the run away from him; the police officer shot and injured Sweat, who was then taken into custody in the town of Constable, New York. He was reportedly unarmed and has been shot twice, with no police officers being injured in the incident.
“At approximately 3:20 p.m. on June 28, Sergeant Jay Cook of the New York State Police spotted a suspicious man walking down a roadway,Sergeant Cook shot and injured escapee David Sweat. Sweat was taken into police custody alive, then taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries,” read an official police statement.
A picture which was obtained by CNN shows Sweat on the ground, dressed in full camouflage gear including a jacket, and smeared with blood from his gun wound. The photo also shows medics treating him, with his condition appearing to be stable.
Sweat was apparently transported to Malone’s Alice Hyde Medical Center, but no official news of his condition was released, with reports suggesting he was apparently shot twice. However, officials from the Albany Medical Center have confirmed that Sweat will be transported there, without offering a time frame.
This effectively concludes the massive manhunt for Sweat and his break partner Richard Matt, who was shot and killed by New York officers on Friday after being found close to a hunting cabin near Malone. The duo escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York on June 6th, after using power tools to cut their way through their cells wall.
Over 1,300 police officers were involved in the searching operation for the duo throughout upstate New York during their three weeks of freedom. The two criminals stuck together for most of the time, and the search force was put on their tracks after multiple civil sightings of the two and finding two pairs of tracks in the dense upstate New York woods.
Sweat’s survival is now probably the number one priority, as he can elucidate exactly on how he and Matt managed to escape and who helped. Two other prison workers at Clinton are currently under investigation for possibly aiding them in their escape.
