In the next 80 years, in some of the countries deserts might expand because of the global warming. A new study found just how much some countries are affected by global warming, despite the fact that nobody sees that now. Experts managed to predict how the World is going to be affected if people don’t make some changes.
Their findings showed that some deserts might expand and some countries like Spain can even become a desert in 2100. This is going to happen if global warming is going to raise the temperature with more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. If this happens the ecosystems are going to change more than they ever did in the last 10,000 years.
The biggest problem is that more and more types of trees are going to disappear and this means that we are going to have less oxygen. This study was made in order to show people how much damage global warming has caused and how much it is going to cause in the future.
“The main message is really to maintain at less than 1.5C,” Joel Guiot, a researcher at Aix-Marseille University.
Temperatures have already risen with 1 degree Celsius and in some places, they have risen to more the 1.3 degrees. This might not seem much to people because they can’t observe the difference but for nature, it is a lot. This rise in temperature can affect animals too because they are left without their natural habitat. Polar bears, for instance, are going to be left without their natural habitat once the sea ice from the Artic melts.
The areas that are the most affected by global warming are the Mediterranean countries. For instance, if this continues, deserts might expand North Africa and Spain. This will also affect vegetation and the trees that are going to disappear will be replaced by other types of vegetation.
Scientists predicted that is there is a rise in temperature of more than 5 degrees; things are going to get even worse. The food production is going to be affected because some trees are not going to produce as much as they produced before and some of them might not even exist anymore. The ones that conducted this study also mentioned that people who live in the Mediterranean areas are going to be more affected because those areas are more sensitive to global warming than other.
