In 2011, HTC smartphones made up for 11 percent of the total U.S. smartphone market and even surpassing Apple and Samsung in terms of shipments that year. Thing haven’t been going as well since then, as shipments have dropped to less than 2%. In term of profits, 2011 was a glorious year for HTC, the company having succeeded a 67 percent raise in profits. In 2012, however, things started to slowly decline, with earnings dropping 38 %. In 2013 they fell further, with 30 %.
The fall in popularity can be explained by the lack of innovation HTC’s been showing in the past few years. In terms of product design, HTC hasn’t made any changes.
That doesn’t mean the company hasn’t been involved in revolutionizing projects. It collaborated with Valve in developing the virtual reality headset called the Vive which was revealed at the Mobile World Congress which was held at the beginning of March. With this new product, HTC wanted to point out that the focus moved beyond smartphones to the development of connected products.
Wang is enthusiastic about her stepping in as leader of HTC. She gave the following statement:
“We are seeing fast changes in the business, with the smartphone as our private hub connecting us to a developing world of wise devices. We pioneered the smartphone sector now we are applying that pondering to realize a new generation of connected items and services. The overwhelming response that our virtual reality item, HTC Vive, received earlier this month underlines the importance of these new connected technologies for our future.”
She continued by expressing her excitement in regards to all the opportunities she and the company are about to face:
“I am honored to accept this opportunity to shape the next stage of HTC’s development”.
Many consider that HTC shouldn’t lose focus and try to innovate its smartphone line which makes most of the profits. HTC hasn’t changed much of the A series design which many consider to be “boring and predictable”. But as previous CEO Peter Chou will step in as head of design, things might change for the better.
