Legalizing it was not enough. Performing studies to assess its positive effects on health was not enough. Proving that it helps people who are facing depression was not enough. Basically everything was in vain in the constant attempt to convince US officials that marijuana is not necessarily a harmful drug but it can alternatively be perceived as extremely efficient medication.
Finally, the US government’s top drug cop has acknowledged that marijuana is less dangerous than heroin. Captain obvious much? Heroin kills people, while pot brings people back to life. Conclusions were reached after an extensive meeting with reporters yesterday at the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The meeting was meant to clarify a recently made statement. Reporters were told that pot is “probably not” as dangerous as heroin. The uncertainty makes us raise our eyebrows, as first of all, heroin is a synthetic drug, and everything chemical brings extremely bad consequences to our general health system. Secondly, heroin is injected, which exposes people to the risk of developing fatal diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis and many other infections that could bear fatal consequences.
Marijuana is a fundamentally natural herb that has an active substance which is slowly assimilated by our brains, providing an essentially natural high. Natural, as there is no chemical substance involved in the process.
Researchers have known for decades that pot is a much safer substance compared to heroin. Marijuana is much safer than all other psychoactive drugs, as a matter of fact. This is the very reason why an increasing number of countries is thinking of lifting the ban on the pot. It is dramatically less habit forming compared to heroin that is strongly related to sometimes fatal cases of addiction. Pot is even less addictive compared to nicotine and provides relief from pain.
According to expert opinions, medical marijuana treatments hold a giant amount of potential, especially as an alternative to extremely dangerous prescription painkillers. It is essentially a natural herb.
Everything about marijuana was known since 1972, when a federal report was released, under President Richard Nixon’s commission. Back then, Nixon declared that pot use and possession should be decriminalized, as “neither the marijuana user nor the drug itself can be said to constitute a danger to public safety”.
Four states already have laws which allow regulated markets for recreational marijuana. A serious bunch of other states regulate sales of medical pot. Almost all cases of marijuana possession remain a federal crime, however, as DEA agents and federal prosecutors target people who hardly comply with state laws.
Of course heroin is more dangerous than pot, and all evidence leads to that. The next step is to make people see for themselves that marijuana shouldn’t be considered a drug in the first place. Not more than nicotine or alcohol are, nevertheless.
