Although taking the title of Best Game of the Year at multiple award shows, Witcher 3 didn’t really sell that well in comparison to COD Black Ops 3.
If you were wondering how games fared last year in terms of sale numbers, the best selling games of 2015 list has been released by the NPD. The leaderboard in question shows some rather interesting numbers when comparing what games sold the most with the ones that took Game of the Year awards.
The front runner of the list is Call Of Duty Black Ops 3, rather unsurprising given the franchise’s popularity. Almost every year COD bore the title of most selling game, regardless of its competition. The 2nd place was taken by Madden NFL16, but this changed during the month of December, when Star Wars Battlefront was marked as the 2nd best selling game.
Bethesda’s Fallout 4 stayed on the 3rd place both during the whole year and the month of December as well, while the 4th place showed the switch from 2nd place accordingly, with Madden taking it during December and Star Wars Battlefront during 2015 in general.
The same switch happened between the 5th and 6th place as well, with NBA 2K16 fighting with GTA V for sale numbers. During December, NBA won against GTA while in regards to the whole year, GTA V overthrew NBA for the 5th place.
This list is rather interesting due to the fact that the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt and Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain were nowhere to be found, at all. In regards to sports games, even if Rocket League won the Best Sports Game in the VGA 2015 show, passing NBA, FIFA and Madden along the way, the game was omitted from the list. This is due to the fact that the leaderboard encompassed only physical copies’ sale numbers, dismissing digital versions entirely.
Console sale numbers were unsurprising as well, with PS4 and Xbox One continuing their ascent, boosting numbers by 48% gradually over the course of 2015. Last-gen consoles showed that consumers are fully engaged in the transition towards next-gen, with PS3 and Xbox 360 sale numbers decreasing by a whopping 53%. The best selling game console of 2015 and December as well was the PS4, leaving Xbox One behind by a significant margin.
Seeing how most games fared during last year in regards to sale numbers because the best selling games of 2015 list has been released, it seems that the gaming market in general is slowly growing with each year that passes.
